What is it?
The Revised Neurophysiology of Pain Questionnaire is designed to assess how an individual conceptualizes the biological mechanisms of his/her pain. Patients are asked to mark 13 statements about pain as “true”, “false”, or “undecided.” One mark is given for each correct answer.
The CPA website provides 3 reasons a clinician may consider using the R-NPQ:
1. To measure patients’ knowledge of pain
2. To determine where patients require further pain education
3. To evaluate effectiveness of pain education sessions
Our Thoughts:
This is a simple tool that clinicians can use to assess a patient’s understanding of pain mechanisms. This can help clinicians tailor their pain education to individual patients.
