Canadian C-Spine Rule

What Is It?

Similar to the Ottawa Ankle Rules, the Canadian C-Spine Rules are a list of criteria to help you determine whether a cervical spine X-ray may or may not be warranted.

Our Thoughts:

Although designed for use primarily in the ER, physio’s should also have a good understanding of these rules. In cases of traumatic neck injuries, patients may bypass the ER and come see a physiotherapist first. These guidelines outline red flags in the history, help you determine whether AROM is safe to assess and whether X-rays may be needed.
