STarT Back Tool

What Is It?

The STarT Back Tool is a clinical outcome measure used to identify patients with low back pain who display negative prognostic factors. These negative prognostic factors include depressive symptoms, pain catastrophizing and fear avoidance beliefs. The score classifies patients into 3 categories: low risk requiring likely minimal intervention, medium risk requiring more intensive physiotherapy intervention and patients at high risk for a poor recovery and who may benefit most from a referral to a multidisciplinary site for both physical and psychological support.

Our Thoughts:

This simple and easy outcome measure takes no time at all and provides you with valuable information regarding prognosis. It’s a great tool to use in your management of patients with low back pain!
